At just 11 years old, Amelia de Thierry is already making a big name for herself in the world of BMX racing. With determination, talent, and a packed racing schedule, Amelia has been competing at the highest levels both in New Zealand and overseas.
Earlier this year she travelled to Brisbane for the Oceania Championships, where she finished an impressive fifth out of 29 riders. In March, she raced at the New Zealand Nationals and earned the title of NZ No. 2 in her age group.
Amelia has also been selected for the NZ Mighty 11 junior test team, winning all five of her races during trials and being named captain of the girls’ team. She and her teammates are now in Taree, Australia, to take on the Australian Mighty 11 team. Adding to an already exciting year, Amelia has also qualified for the BMX World Championships in Brisbane this July.
We caught up with Amelia to talk about her racing journey, training, goals, and what she loves most about BMX.
When did you start riding BMX and why did you want to start?
I started on my balance bike at 2 years old, I was racing on a pedal bike at 3 years and competed at my first National Championships at 4 years old. I started because my brother used to race BMX.
Do you get inspired by any professional NZ riders?
Leila Walker & Bennett Greenough. They are so good at BMX and both really nice. They always talk to me about my riding.
What do you love about the sport and competing?
I love manualling and jumping! Hanging out with my friends from all over the country & Australia. I get to travel a lot too which is fun.
What training and practice is required ?
I ride the track a few times a week, race most weekends over the summer. I also do workouts and sprints.
What’s happening for you in the next couple of months?
In July I travel to Brisbane Australia for the World Championships. This will be my first World Championships and I am really looking forward to meeting new friends from around the world.
What would you say to others who are keen to get into the sport?
Give it a go and have fun!
