As 2025 draws to a close, long-time community figure, storyteller, and dry-stock farmer Rex Hohaia took a moment to reflect on a year that’s been both challenging and rewarding.
Known for his much-loved history pieces and his ongoing involvement in local projects like Davies Park and Te Ōhākī Marae, Rex has spent the year deeply connected to the people and places that shape our community.
We sat down with him to talk highlights, writing, whānau, and what readers can look forward to from him in 2026.
How would you sum up 2025 for you Rex?
I’d say that 2025 has been challenging. I’m involved in a couple of community projects (Davies Park. Te Ohaki Marae). that keeps me interacting with a wide cross-section of the Community.
On my dry-stock farming side, prices are up, good for sellers, expensive for buyers.
What was the highlight of the year?
Probably being in the VIP Lounge (compliments of Mr. Tawera Nikau) at Eden Park to watch the NZ Kiwi Rugby League team play Samoa.
Chauffeur driven to the front entrance too (compliments of Mr. Anaru Thompson). Oh, my wife Jennifer and I did visit son Lance and the moko in Grand Rapids USA, for 4 weeks during June.
What is the process involved with writing the history pieces ?
So far, the articles are from the heart, most are the fact that I was there in person or closely related to someone who was there.
How does it feel to see them published ?
Quite pleasing. I want to acknowledge my Mum and Dad for giving me the opportunity(read paying!) to attend St. Stephens boarding school whose motto was [Constanter in Caelum] “steadfastly towards the Heavens” or in todays’ language – “the Sky’s the limit!”.
A lot of people are very complimentary also. Thank you.
What are you and the whanau doing for Christmas and the holidays ?
I’ve seen 75 Christmases. Finally I’ve learned how to pace myself and wait for all the whanau to visit me.
What topics and subjects can we look forward to reading about from you in 2026 ?
My time as Waikato Cougars Football Manager during 1994/95/96/97 and more historical stories centered on footy (Carlaw Park).
I definitely won’t be writing about politics! Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year – from the Hohaia whanau
