It has been just over a year since Mercury began exploring the potential for a new wind farm, Waikokowai, on land west of Huntly.
During that time, the team leading the work has met with communities in and around Pukemiro, Glen Afton and Ruawaro, responded to individual questions and requests for information, met with people one-on-one and regularly shared information updates.
Chris Tobin, Mercury’s Project Developer, says it had been a busy year, and he appreciated the time people gave to meet with the project team.
“The drop-in community sessions are a good way for us to update people on our work but also a valuable opportunity for us to hear the thoughts and opinions of the community.”
Chris says a number of key themes emerged from conversations with people this year.
“That has helped us shape the way we approach our work in the community.
“We want to keep that momentum going, and so we’re planning to have our next community drop-in at the Blue Rooms (Glen Afton Club) in February next year.
“We’re excited to host at this beautiful new community facility and hope everyone who is interested can attend to learn more about the project.”
The proposed wind farm site is a large section of hill country between Highway 22, Rotowaro Road, and Hetherington Road. It has been chosen because it experiences strong winds, it’s close to existing infrastructure, and meets a range of environmental factors.
Mercury has carried out detailed environmental assessments this year, to understand and minimise any potential impacts on the landscape and wildlife.
Visual impacts were also carefully considered, with experts engaged in helping develop designs that are sensitive to the surrounding environment.
“We understand people will be curious about this work. We encourage people to speak with us directly, join our email list for updates, or come along to our next drop-in session.”
Chris said he is looking forward to working with the community again in 2026.
“For now, we want to wish everyone the best for this Christmas, we hope people have a safe and enjoyable break, spending time together with friends and family over the holidays.”
Community drop-in session: Blue Rooms (Glen Afton Club), 25 February, 4.30pm-7pm.
