On the 17th of February, seven members from the Huntly College Services Academy travelled to Whenuapai Air Base in Auckland for a 12-day induction camp. During our time there, we were immersed in military-style discipline and lived in barracks.

Throughout the induction camp, we participated in various lessons and activities, including physical training (PT), which involved the NZ Army fitness test (RFL), as well as corrective and remedial training (CT). For CT, we performed exercises like push-ups and squats.
Additionally, we had the opportunity to take part in activities like high ropes at Tree Adventures and mountain biking. We also spent time at the Tamaki Leadership Centre in Whangaparaoa. The staff provided us with RMAS/Ration packs to keep us fuelled for the next 24 hours.
Our first activity was a cross-country event, followed by a pitch-black tunnel navigation. Some of us from Huntly particularly enjoyed the experience and even wished we could do it again.
Afterward, our platoon returned to our campsite to set up tents for a well-deserved night’s rest. The following morning, we woke up early, before sunrise, to begin an activity called “push, pull, carry.” As the name suggests, we had to push, pull, and carry a set of equipment in that exact order, continuing until the sun came up.
Afterward, we completed individual tasks as academies. Huntly’s task involved completing the confidence course, followed by “little flick,” where we built a small trailer to lift fire hoses. Our final task of the day was a leadership challenge.
On Wednesday, we had the chance to tour the operational side of Whenuapai Air Base. Our guides led us through a hangar and inside an Air Force plane. After the tour, we marched to the K9 housing area to see the Force Protection dogs.
Unfortunately, due to a COVID outbreak on the course, all academies were sent home early. Despite this setback, we completed the 12-day induction course. Along the way, we made new friends and enjoyed ourselves despite all of the challenges. We learnt new skills, completed team-oriented tasks, and developed leadership qualities that will carry us into future courses, our careers, and beyond.
