Kimihia Home and Hospital: A Pillar of Aged Care

Kimihia Home and Hospital has been a cornerstone of aged care in Huntly for 46 years, providing essential support to the elderly community. 

Their recent Sunday Fun Walk for a Cause gave the community a rare opportunity to explore the scenic Kimihia Lake trail while raising funds for the home. With strong local support and ongoing initiatives, the group continues to make a meaningful impact.

Can you describe Kimihia Home and Hospital and the services it provides to the community?

Kimihia Home and Hospital is a non-profit, community-owned aged residential care facility in Huntly, with a capacity of 77 beds. Established in March 1979, it has been dedicated to serving the elderly community of Huntly and surrounding areas for 46 years.

The facility provides a range of care services, including Dementia, Rest Home, and Hospital-level care. It also offers Respite Care, giving primary caregivers a much-needed break, and Day Stay Care, allowing non-residents to enjoy social interaction in a supportive environment.

Tell us about ‘Friends of Kimihia’ and the vital role they play.

Friends of Kimihia is a volunteer trust that has supported the facility since its establishment. Comprising dedicated community members, the group actively raises funds to enhance the quality of care, upgrade equipment, and improve amenities for residents. Their efforts make a significant difference in the lives of those at Kimihia Home.

Tell us about the recent fundraising events that have supported Kimihia Home and Hospital.

Friends of Kimihia recently organised the ‘Sunday Fun Walk for a Cause’ on 16 March at the Kimihia Lake trail. The Kimihia Lakes Restoration and Development project opened the trail to the public exclusively for the event, as the site remains an ongoing project.

Over the past few months, Friends of Kimihia have also run several successful fundraisers, including an Easter raffle, drawn on the same day as the walk, a bowling tournament at the Huntly Bowls Club, and a Christmas raffle during the holiday season.

How was the turnout for the charitable walk, and what was the general atmosphere?

Approximately 100 people took part in the walk, drawn by the rare opportunity to explore the Kimihia Lake trail. There was a strong sense of excitement and curiosity, with many participants stopping to take photos of the scenic lakeside route.

Families of Kimihia Home residents were among the attendees, with some travelling long distances to participate. Several wore purple to represent Dementia awareness, honouring loved ones affected by Alzheimer’s and related conditions. One family even created custom t-shirts featuring a family photo taken at the home.

Participants of all ages – including children, partners, and friends – joined the walk, showing their support for Kimihia Home. Many expressed their hope that the event would become a regular tradition, with the lake providing a meaningful and symbolic setting.
