The Huntly Volunteer Fire Brigade (HVFB) has returned home victorious after delivering an outstanding performance at the United Fire Brigades’ Association (UFBA) National Road Crash Rescue Challenge, held over three days beginning Thursday, June 11.
Competing against 16 of the country’s top brigades, Huntly faced a series of highly advanced and increasingly complex rescue scenarios designed to test crews’ technical skills, teamwork, and medical response under pressure. Despite the tough competition this year, the Huntly team excelled across multiple disciplines, securing an impressive list of top honours.
The brigade claimed first place in several key categories, including Overall Trauma (Medical only scenarios), Best Medic Team (Whole competition), Heavy Entrapment, and Controlled Rescue – achievements that highlight both their technical rescue capabilities and medical expertise.
The highlight of the competition came when Huntly Volunteer Fire Brigade was awarded the prestigious New Zealand Safety Trophy, the highest accolade presented at the event and one that brigades nationwide aspire to win.
The remarkable result follows months of intensive training, preparation, and dedication by the volunteer crew. Their success reflects a strong commitment to excellence and readiness in responding to real-life emergency situations.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer and Road Crash Rescue Team Leader Matthew Tregoweth said the result was a true reflection of the team effort behind the scenes.
“This achievement is something the entire brigade can be proud of. The amount of work, commitment, and sacrifice that goes in behind the scenes is huge – not just from our firefighters, but from their families who support them every step of the way and make it possible for them to attend trainings, callouts, and competitions,” Tregoweth said.
“We’d also like to extend a huge thank you to the UFBA for once again hosting such a well-run and challenging event, and to our sponsors, Ward Demolition and Bil Autos, for their ongoing support making competitions and trainings possible. We acknowledge the high calibre of all the brigades who competed, it’s a privilege to work and compete alongside such dedicated crews from across the country.”
The brigade also acknowledged the high standard of competition, congratulating all teams who took part from across New Zealand and those who received awards.
The achievement has been met with pride throughout the local community, with the Huntly Volunteer Fire Brigade earning widespread recognition for their exceptional performance on the national stage
