Reflections on work, life, and the little things that make a difference
This column explores the small changes that quietly shape our everyday lives – drawing meaning from ordinary moments and experiences. It doesn’t promise answers but hopes to offer perspective and perhaps a little calm along the way.
When Effort Travels Further
Not long ago, I was speaking with someone who had been trying hard to secure better work. He is the kind of person who turns up on time, follows through and genuinely wants to build a better future for his family.
But despite all of that, progress felt slow because even though opportunities existed, applying for them took time. Every application meant adjusting a resume, rewriting a cover letter and trying to phrase previous experience in a way that matched the role being advertised.
After a full day of responsibilities and work, there was only so much energy left to give. He knew that if he applied for enough suitable jobs, interviews would eventually come but the challenge wasn’t willingness – it was capacity.
Being someone who advocates for digital tools, I introduced ChatGPT to him and he started using it to help shape resumes and cover letters more efficiently. This wasn’t to invent experience or exaggerate ability but simply to organise and communicate what was already there.
Soon, something interesting happened – the quality of the applications remained strong but the process became much faster. Instead of spending hours starting each application from scratch, he could focus his energy on refining and personalising what had already been drafted.
Suddenly, he was able to apply for nearly twice as many suitable roles as before, and because of that, more interviews began emerging. Eventually, one of those opportunities turned into a genuinely good job.
A Thought to Carry With Us?
Watching that process unfold made me reflect on how often we assume outcomes are determined purely by effort alone. But sometimes, effort is only part of the equation – the ability to extend that effort further matters too.
For a long time, progress was often limited by time, energy and capacity. More and more though, the difference between people is not who is willing to work hard but rather, who knows how to work alongside the tools now available to them.
And tools have always changed that equation. A tractor allowed one farmer to work more land. A calculator allowed complex sums to be solved more quickly. And perhaps AI tools like ChatGPT are becoming another version of that same shift – not replacing human capability but extending its reach instead.
Ultimately, the difference isn’t always about one person working harder than another. Sometimes, it’s simply that their effort is able to travel further.
